What I Know About Storytelling

I admire a good story. But in investigations, storytelling is a warning sign. Honest recall is usually plain and sometimes clumsy. Deceptive recall grows into polished performance. The liar justifies, explains, adds context you never asked for. They don’t just tell you what happened, they tell you why, how, and what it all means. It feels compelling, but compelling isn’t the same as true. What I know about storytelling is this: the longer the account, the less I trust it. If the story grows bigger than the facts, I know it’s carrying something it shouldn’t.
